Modimolle at a glance

The Waterberg region is made up of the Modimolle; Bela-Bela and Vaalwater areas.

Modimolle, originally named Nylstroom, is situated in the Limpopo Province in South Africa.  A hill resembling a pyramid alongside a river, led settlers to think that they had arrived in Egypt. Believing that the river was the Nile River and stroom, meaning stream in Afrikaans, this area earned the name Nylstroom.  The new name of Modimolle means 'the spirits have eaten' relating to the tradition of the local tribesman offering food to the ancestors as well as boasting the popular Kranskop "holy mountain" known as the "place of Spirits".

Vaalwater is a small village situated further North of Modimolle. This is the central village located in the majestic Waterberg Mountain Range. The Mokolo River is also nearby. The region is known for exporting grapes and soft fruits as well as other products such as peanuts and maize.  Some towns just have that feel-good-factor - and Vaalwater which forms part of Modimolle is one such town. The small population in this village is growing, due to a variety of game, nature reserves, accommodation and working farms.  The climate is pleasant with hot summers and moderate winters. The warmth in this small town makes it a relaxed easy-going village to live and own property in. Vaalwater is also a good stop over destination on your way to/from Modimolle in the Waterberg, or on your way up North.
