Snuggled between the Onrus Mountains and the whitecaps of the seaboard, lies the coastal picturesque hamlet of Vermont (Green Mountain). The villagers are very proud of the area's natural heritage and the locals are mostly enthusiastic nature lovers and avid bird and marine life watchers. The town fathers of Vermont were very adamant about not wanting to destroy the exceptional character which all residents and frequent visitors love and placed a moratorium on the future exploiting of the town by too many commercial projects. The town must be one of the most closely guarded secrets of the Overberg, which means that the flora and fauna stay protected, the magic lives on, and the locals are a friendly, welcoming and hospitable people. Vermont is renowned for not only all the areas zoned as public open spaces or Green Belts, the Vermont pan with its bird hide and all the different bird species, its frequent sightings of whales and dolphins, its ever present mountain views, but also, to top it all, its beautiful coastal walkway leading all the way from the Onrust River mouth and the beaches, to the privately owned Hoek-van-die-Berg Nature Reserve on the western side.
