Sandton at a glance
Sandton is rated as one of the most up-market areas in South Africa. It was established as a separate municipality in 1969 and the name was derived from two suburbs, namely Bryanston and Sandown. These properties offered the original homeowners smallholdings with stand sizes of about 2 hectares (5 acres). Today, many of these large stands have either been subdivided or developed into high density apartments. Sandton City, the shopping centre and commercial tower, opened in 1973 and has been the core of commercial development in the area. It now has a huge footprint and boasts The Leonardo, which is the tallest building in South Africa. Sandton has a diverse property offering from city apartments to mansions on 4000m2 stands.
Green areas have always been part of urban planning and there are many placed across Sandton. Some of the larger ones include: Johannesburg Country Club Golf Course, The River Club Golf Course, George Lea Park, Delta Park, Innesfree Park, Ernest Ullmann Recreational Centre. The Braamfontein Spruit is a real gem, and stretches across 37km of municipal parkland, maintained by businesses and the community.
Opening in 1918, Craighall Primary is one of the oldest schools in the area. Saint Stithians, Bryanston Prep and Highschool, Bryaneven, Sandown High, Rivonia Junior are among the excellent feeder schools in the area as well as Crawford College, Redhill, Michael Mount Waldorf School.
There are many boutique type smaller shopping centres around Sandton like Nicolway, Morningside Shopping Centre and Bryanston Shopping Centre. Montecasino offers a plethora of world class shops and a buzzing social scene for Sandton residents.
Amenities, where to eat, where to meet and entertainment are endless in Sandton. Liliesleaf Farm, where Nelson Mandela lived in the early 1960s and where many leading political activists were arrested in 1963, is in Sandton. If you want to buy a high-end motor car, then Sandton is the place, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley etc. However, properties on offer in Sandton don't need to be sportscar prices. The architecture is very diverse from modern high-rise apartments to more conventional suburban homes. Sandton boasts some of the most exclusive addresses in SA and is home to some of the most expensive real estate on offer, however, being a diverse metropolitan city, prices vary from around R1 million to tens of millions of Rands.
