Durban at a glance

Originally called Rio de Natal by Vasco d Gama when he visited in 1497 Durban later received its name from a governor of the Cape Colony named Sir Benjamin D'Urban.  Durban is a cultural melting pot of diversity, ethnicity and top-class cuisine that represents culinary influences from around the world.  Located on the northeast coast of South Africa and being the biggest port, Durban is the heart of Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Durban is 30 kms from the King Shaka International airport and close to Umhlanga in the North, Amanzimtoti in the South and the Upper Highway area inland.

Whether you are a beginner surfer or experienced, there are waves to suit your abilities, Vetch's Pier, Bay of Plenty, Dairy Beach, Anstey's Beach and Cove Rock are a few.  If you prefer being under the waves, learn how to scuba dive at Calypso Dive & Adventure Centre. 
In the 1800's Indian migrant workers came to work in the sugarcane plantations, bringing with them delicious flavours of Indian cuisine. A uniquely Durban Street food is a sumptuous bunny chow, a hollowed out half loaf of bread stuffed with authentic Indian curry, they are such a favourite that fine dining establishment have put their own twist on them to make them worthy of top-quality restaurants menus.  
The Moses Mabida stadium built for the 2010 soccer world cup is a hot spot for music and sporting events. It's home to the Big Rush swing mounted 80m above the ground on the stadiums graceful arch and is the world's tallest swing. You can climb the stairs to the top of the arch or take the SkyCar to admire magnificent panoramic views of the coast and the city. 
With authentic craft markets, sprawling malls like Gateway Theatre of Shopping and The Pavillion as well as upmarket boutiques, Durban is a dream destination for the shopaholic. 
uShaka Marine World includes a reptile house, a rope adventure park and the Village Walk to enjoy open air dining with its 2 main attractions being the aquarium and the water park. Moyo, a truly African inspired restaurant and the Cargo Hold, a ship shaped fine dining restaurant are 2 restaurants designed to impress.
